Food Webs and the Evolution of Organism Complexity

چکیده

This paper investigates the role of ecological interactions in the evolution of complexity through the results of simulations. Webworld is a robust model of evolution in food webs. It is extended for variability of organism complexity under evolution. Statistical and network analysis indicates a clear tendency for complexification within the model, led by adaptations that initially disconnect species from trophic interactions. This suggests a process where short term fitness is increased by less connection to the ecosystem, but long term fitness is insured by incorporation within the ecosystem. Certainly it suggests a greater role for ecosystems in the evolution of complexity.

An Ecological Approach to the Evolution of Organism Complexity

How evolution led to complex life is one of the great questions. This paper describes simulations that investigate the role of ecological interactions in the evolution of complexity. Webworld is a robust model of evolution in food webs. It is extended for variability of organism complexity under evolution. Statistical and network analysis indicates a clear tendency for complexification within t...

The possibility of occurrence of the phenomenon “fishing down marine food webs” in the coastal waters of Hormozgan Province (north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea)

We examined the temporal trend in mean trophic level (mTL), trophic category landing (TrC) and landing profile (LP) of the exploited marine community (49 species) in the fishing zone of Hormozgan (north of Persian Gulf and Oman Sea) from 2001 to 2011. LP had an increasing trend (r = 0.88, P<0.001), whereas, mTL of the landings showed a significant decrease from 2001 to 2011 (r = -0.69, P<0.05)....

Evolutionary emergence of size-structured food webs.

Explaining the structure of terrestrial and aquatic food webs remains one of the most important challenges of ecological theory. Most existing models use emergent properties of food webs, such as diversity and connectance as parameters, to determine other food-web descriptors. Lower-level processes, in particular adaptation (whether by behavioral, developmental, or evolutionary mechanisms), are...

Persistence Increases with Diversity and Connectance in Trophic Metacommunities

BACKGROUND We are interested in understanding if metacommunity dynamics contribute to the persistence of complex spatial food webs subject to colonization-extinction dynamics. We study persistence as a measure of stability of communities within discrete patches, and ask how do species diversity, connectance, and topology influence it in spatially structured food webs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FI...

Evolution of Information and Complexity in an Ever-Expanding Universe

Using the usual definitions of information and entropy in quantum gravity and statistical mechanics and the existing views about the relation between information and complexity, we examine the evolution of complexity in an ever expanding universe.
